  • Shadow Conflicts: Fi seen as idealistic, do-gooding, no real effort put into action; Ti seen as cold, detached, selfish, useless; Te seen as overbearing, cold, detached, uncaring

Level 1: Self-Protection Mindset

distorted Fe: hypersensitive, overbearing, needy, avoid direct conflict, gossipy, judgmental, guarded, selective listening to find offense
distorted Ni: overdependent, opinionated, manipulative, insistent, controlling, bossy, self-righteous
under intense stress or in the grip of Ti: repress feelings, attempts at extreme logic, compulsive search for truth, delude themselves that all is fine, critical, negative, inflexible, blunt, dogmatic, coercive, hurtful

Level 2: Social Identification Mindset

Fe: need to maintain ego image as organizer, caretaker, unselfish; seek out and enjoy being a supportive/sensitive member of a group
ego defense: repress true feelings, avoid sensitive subjects, misinterpret others’ comments or body language, very critical and defensive against those who are different, create us/them situations to rally support

Level 3: Selfhood Mindset

Fe: organized, expressive, gregarious, enthusiastic, helpful, generate new ideas, enjoy team spirit; can be judgmental, inflexible, bossy, controlling, intense, overwhelming, forceful, take on others’ problems, overburdened, oversensitive to disharmony, impulsive, hasty, impatient, quick to give advice, easily offended
ego defense: seek approval and appreciation, avoid giving/receiving negative feedback, imagine criticism from others, deny negativity, overlook contradictory facts, cannot accept other value systems
see T preference as selfish, harsh, and uncaring; see S preference as lacking vision and obsessive about unimportant things

Level 4: Conscientious Mindset

Fe: enthusiastic, methodical, appreciative, empathic, inclusive, concerned, cooperative, approachable, supportive, caring, encouraging, concerned; can be competitive, hasty
start to notice blind spots like: poor attention to practical details, uncomfortable with objective decision making
ego defense: still give too much priority to personal convictions and get overinvolved in personal issues
start to see some value in T and S preferences as long as they do not go too far against their own preferences; try to balance positive and negative feedback

Level 5: Self-Insight Mindset

Fe: warm, curious, creative, fun, enthusiastic, responsive, positive, engaging, inclusive, supportive, encouraging, nurturing, trustworthy, sociable, devoted
Ni: take time to reflect on options, more flexible, concerned with whether actions really make a meaningful difference, seek greater purpose in work
start to see more value in T and S preferences; feel more comfortable in inharmonious situations; more mindful of inner processes
access to Se: enjoy physically creative pursuits

Level 6: Authenticity Mindset

Balanced Fe+Ni: inspiring, supportive, insightful, imaginative, confident, facilitative, genuine, socially adept, authentic, content, more independent, tactful create genuine group cohesiveness
less need to defend their ego image of being social glue, caring, nurturing, helpful
can start to use T and S preferences appropriately; able to just “be” with people without overbearingly seeking harmony; more mindful of the present moment
access to Ti: begin to trust their own logic, less hasty and take time to think through problems more objectively, enjoy more intellectually stimulating solitary pursuits

Level 7: Wholeness Mindset

realize that the need to organize people and create harmony is driven by ego
accepting of differences; value other perspectives, especially recognizing that not everyone needs to share the same values
can integrate S, N, T, F preferences; freed from black and white thinking and able to see a “third” viable perspective to work from
