ENTJ Process of Ego Development
1
Level 1: Self-Protection Mindset
distorted Te: arrogant, aggressive, detached, confrontational, argumentative, shout down others, overpower others, undermine others, condescending, unwilling to listen
distorted Ni: critical, opinionated, nitpicky, judgmental
under intense stress or in the grip of Fi: criticize by using extreme “logic”, rationalize, desperately conceal their own vulnerabilities/flaws; hypersensitive to their own inner state, fear negative emotions, prone to uncontrollable emotional outbursts
2
Level 2: Social Identification Mindset
Te: need to maintain ego image as influential and competent; seek out and enjoy being in leadership roles
ego defense: defend their own “team” and belittle those perceived as weak or threatening, desperate to not lose face in front of others, avoid appearing weak in front of others
3
Level 3: Selfhood Mindset
Te: make improvements, get things done, seek challenges, decisive, logical, very competitive and seek to win, look for positions of influence or power; can be demanding, impatient, domineering, insensitive, sarcastic, bossy, controlling
ego defense: try to force everyone to adhere to their standards, have trouble letting go of tasks or assignments (cannot relinquish control)
see F preference as overinvolved, weak, subjective; see P preference as frustratingly indecisive and lazy
4
Level 4: Conscientious Mindset
Te: analytical, systematic, forward-thinking, high aspirations, strive for improved efficiency, implement plans effectively, fair, appropriately challenge others, encouraging; can still be dismissive of others’ opinions
start to notice blind spots like: poor attention to practical details, inability to stick with routine or repetitive tasks, interpersonal insensitivity
ego defense: still try to rationalize away issues with logic and overlook the importance of interpersonal connectedness
start to see some value in F and S preferences as long as they do not go too far against their own preferences; interested in self-improvement; can accept “valuable” negative feedback
5
Level 5: Self-Insight Mindset
Te: sharp, conceptual, strategic, facilitate progress and improvement; can accept that not every result will be logically clear/perfect
Ni: take more time to enjoy the process/journey rather than always focusing on end results, begin to allow perceived imperfections to be visible to others, more selective in choosing which challenges to tackle
start to see more value in F and S preferences; start to think about how to benefit people; more mindful of inner processes; better at encouraging others to find their own direction
access to Se: enjoy physically demanding pursuits
6
Level 6: Authenticity Mindset
Balanced Te+Ni: objective, focused, visionary, synthesize ideas, enthusiastic, committed, see and nurture potential in others
less need to defend their ego image of being competent and independent
can start to use F and S preferences appropriately; able to just “be” with people without always needing to “achieve” something; more mindful of the present moment and in touch with physical body
access to Fi: more in touch with themselves, acknowledge their own limitations, accept ambiguity, understand the importance of relationships
7
Level 7: Wholeness Mindset
realize that the need for striving, achievement, and visionary thinking is driven by ego
accepting of differences; value other perspectives, especially recognizing that not everyone needs or wants to continually strive to be maximally efficient and competent
can integrate S, N, T, F preferences; freed from black and white thinking and able to see a “third” viable perspective to work from
