INTP Process of Ego Development
1
Level 1: Self-Protection Mindset
distorted Ti: isolative, distant, forgetful, impatient, blunt, uninterested in others; sometimes try to force logic to fit their view; not open to discussion or compromise; can be secretive, brutal in criticizing, ignore things that seem “illogical”
distorted Ne: arrogance, impracticality, eccentricity, rebelliousness
under intense stress or in the grip of Fe: try to shut out emotion, rationalize, obsessive about being logical, avoid situations where they do not feel competent, fussy, persnickety, hypersensitive to others’ opinion of them, prone to outbursts
2
Level 2: Social Identification Mindset
Ti: need to maintain ego image as noncomformist; seek out groups with similar type preferences
ego defense: guarded; pursue secret interests/hobbies if group type preferences are not aligned with their own
3
Level 3: Selfhood Mindset
Ti: creative problem solvers, seek ultimate truths, seek improvement and progress, look for optimum solutions; can be snobby, critical, sarcastic, cynical, hard to get to know, aloof, insensitive, poor communicators; tend to procrastinate
ego defense: argumentative, avoid taking advice or accepting logic from others; pursue projects in secret without consulting others
see F preference as too involved, weak, subjective; see J preferences as rushing into action
4
Level 4: Conscientious Mindset
Ti: solution-focused, inquisitive, contemplative, precise, calm, long range thinking, make useful mental models, autonomous, non-domineering, tolerant, careful, fair, objective, rational
start to notice blind spots like: poor attention to practical details, insensitivity toward others’ needs
ego defense: still maintain air of detachment and oblivious to how they impact others
start to see some value in F and S preferences as long as they do not go too far against their own preferences; interest in self-improvement; can accept “valuable” negative feedback/criticism
5
Level 5: Self-Insight Mindset
Ti: creative problem-solving, methodical, strategic, observant, curious, insightful, principled, quick learners, relaxed/measured approach
Ne: more focused on timely/workable solutions
start to see more value in F and S preferences; take more time to enjoy simple pleasures in life; more mindful of internal processes; spend more time relating to others; better at encouraging people
access to Si: enjoy hands-on, detail-oriented activities/skills; enjoy reminiscing or revisiting past interests; see life more realistically; do things more carefully/patiently
6
Level 6: Authenticity Mindset
Balanced Ti+Ne: mental agility, imagination, decisiveness, creativity, ingenious thinker, make creative connections in complex issues, keen to share knowledge and their unique perspective
less need to defend their ego image of being intelligent and independent
can start to use F and S preferences appropriately; more in tune with the present and able to just “be” with people without always demanding logical consistency; more in touch with physical body
access to Fe: more empathetic and willing to socialize; more aware of vulnerabilities; better able to express depth of feeling; acknowledge that logic cannot explain everything
7
Level 7: Wholeness Mindset
realize that the need for truth and original thinking is driven by ego
accepting of differences; value other perspectives, especially recognizing that not everyone wants to be inquisitive and logical
can integrate S, N, T, F preferences; freed from black and white thinking and able to see a “third” viable perspective to work from
